FAQ

Do I have to register with you to place an order?

Yes. Stoneworks is a very busy company, and registering with us ensures that we have all of your relevant details to hand when we help you with an enquiry or order. This helps us to provide an efficient service to our customers by preventing mistakes such as incorrect delivery addresses taken over the phone, and means you can be updated on any news related to your order. Your details will not be passed onto a third party or sold to other companies.

How do I place an order?

Once you have registered with us, it is very easy to place an order. Simply add the products you desire to your basket and proceed to the checkout, where on-screen instructions will guide you in completing the information we need. From that point, automated emails will keep you updated on the progress of your order, and you can always call us directly if you have any particular questions.

Where do I find people to template and fit my worktops?

No need to - Stoneworks can supply the full service, including advice, templating, fitting and maintenance products.

What's the correct way to lay tiles?

The 'Guide to Tiling' in the Information section will take you through the steps you need to take when tiling a wall or floor.

How do I keep my stone looking as good as the day it was installed?

The 'Guide to Maintenance' in the Information section will tell you how to keep your natural stone products in top condition for years to come.

What's the difference between all of the finishes on tiles?

The 'Guide to Finishes' in the Information section will tell you everything you need to know.

I can't tell a granite from a marble - what's the difference?

Take a look at the 'Guide to Types of Stone' in the Information section - this will give you a brief education on the properties of each of the types of stone we sell.

Will the stone I buy look exactly like the photograph?

It is important to understand that Stoneworks deals with natural products, and therefore there will always be some degree of variation between different pieces and batches of stone. The product descriptions indicate whether each stone is generally uniform or patterned, but it is highly recommended that you try to see a sample of your stone "in the flesh" before making a purchase. While every effort has been made to provide images which accurately represent each product, a photograph can never do justice to these stones!

Can natural stone get stains?

Natural stone is a porous material, and so can stain, but the different types of stone have varying levels of porosity. Granite, for example, is much less susceptible to staining than a limestone - one of the reasons granite is so good for kitchen worktops. The best way to deal with stains is to prevent them by using good quality sealing products and regular maintenance, but if your stone has suffered a stain then there are products on the market which are designed to remove them.

How much wastage is there when laying tiles?

Generally, you should purchase about 15% more tiles than you estimate you actually need to fill the space. This allows for cutting of tiles around the edges of the tiled area and around other obstacles, and also allows for any wastage from incorrect cuts.

Won't a tiled bathroom floor feel very cold?

Stepping out of the bath or shower onto a freezing cold floor is never pleasant, but with natural stone tiling there is an excellent solution. When you have the floor stripped and ready, we recommend installing underfloor heating. This should always be done by experts as the tiles must be laid using the correct materials, but the effect is fantastic with a warm floor feeling much nicer against your skin; underfloor heating is also more cost efficient and more environmentally friendly than normal radiators.

How do I cut the tiles?

Natural stone is much harder than ceramic or other tiles, and so a diamond blade is required to cut them. Stoneworks recommend that you leave the cutting to professionals.

How should I prepare for the templating visit?

While templating may appear to be a relatively simple procedure of taking some measurements, it is in fact an absolutely vital stage to get right the first time, and there are a few things you can do to help ensure that there are no problems down the line. Ensure that cabinets are secured firmly to the wall and are perfectly level. Make sure you have decided the final locations of sinks, hobs, taps or any other fittings.

You must then make sure that nothing is moved or changed after your kitchen has been templated. Changes after  measurements have been taken are likely to cause significant difficulties and could be very costly to deal with.

Will you connect my gas and water fittings?

No. Very few fitters, if any, are qualified to connect water and gas fittings. Our fitters will fit your hobs, taps, sinks and so on, but will never connect them - you will need to hire a professional plumber to do this.
